You are absolutely correct, no gui is going to replace learning the basics
and the text files. I was suggesting that for a new user using swat might
be easier to start with, he can also have a look at the smb.conf file and
see the modifications that swat did and later when he understands what is
going on he can do it himself.

Samba isnt really a hard tool to configure its config files are quite user 
friendly, unlike applications like sendmail, configuring sendmail needed 
you to read that 1300 page book by eric alman(?) about sendmail.

Yes the amount of dollars you save from the windows licencing is enough 
incentive to switch to linux.
