Okay, I just recompiled the kernel using 2.6.21-r4.  All the same
selections in make menuconfig.  The *only* difference was that the
xserver wasn't running in the background when I compiled the
nvidia-drivers.  This time I was able to get into X after restarting the
server after compiling the nvidia-drivers against 2.6.21-r4.

Lesson learned I guess.  Thanks Denis for the xdm tip.  It's one I
probably wouldn't have thought of.  I never had to worry about doing
that with ati-drivers ;-)

And again, I apologize to Jesùs for my earlier testiness.  What can I
say, I was a day without a decent computer at home and I'm a junky!  ;-)
