Shapefiles are fine if you can live within their limitations, e.g. short
attribute names (conversion will
likely cut longer names), no ability to index alphanumeric attributes
(while providing a damn fast spatial index
and quite fast data reading).
So excellent format for simple data if your map rendering "selection" is
mostly driven by bbox
(don't think about thematic mapping as an issue, the lack of alphanumeric
index is an issue only
if you render say 1% of the data, and that 1% is selected by some
alphanumeric value as opposed
by the bounding box).
