Hi Chris,

So you are looking to patch existing geoserver functionality? If so you will
probably want to checkout some things in the developer guide:

http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/developer/maven-guide/index.html
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/developer/eclipse-guide/index.html

If you are just looking to connect geoserver to sql server you can do that
pretty much out of the box. You just need to download the sql server
extension [1] and then install the jdbc driver from microsoft. As for
creating thematic maps with geoserver that is also available out the box and
documented [2].
