Bingo, I think this is the problem since I have java7.

Only solution is tu upgrade java up to 8 or use an older version of geoserver,
isn't it?

Hi Eugenio,
just to make sure, you are using Java 8 right (I'm asking because 14.04 shipped
with java 7 I believe) ?
Java 8 is the minimum supported version for GeoServer 2.9.x and onwards

Cheers
Andrea

Hi,

unfortunately the procedures thought had problems.

Just to provide more complete info: the server is an ubuntu server 14.04 and
tomcat is at 7 version.

As suggested:

  1. I stopped tomcat
  2. I moved the DIR geoserver (within /var/lib/tomcat7/webapps) to a backup
DIR as well as geoserver.war file (the old version 2.3.2)
  3. I moved geoserver.war (the new version 2.9.1) in the tomcat container
(with the same ownership and grants)
  4. I restarted tomcat

Geoserver doesn't work, the log (catalina.out) report this line for /geoserver:

ott 06, 2016 9:07:38 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader
clearReferencesThreads
GRAVE: The web application [/geoserver] appears to have started a thread named
[Timer-13] but has failed to stop it. This is very likely to create a memory
leak.

ott 06, 2016 9:12:12 AM org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig deployWAR
INFORMAZIONI: Deploying web application archive
/var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/geoserver.war

ott 06, 2016 9:12:20 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext startInternal
GRAVE: Context [/geoserver] startup failed due to previous errors

that are quite general.

What do you think?Any suggestions?

The general GeoServer upgrade process is as follows: Back up the current data
directory. This can involve simply copying the directory to an additional place.

Backing up Geoserver's data-directory, doing a clean install, and putting the
directory back (or re-creating the symbolic link if that's how you're doing it)
should be enough. Personally, I typically create an image (snapshot) of the
entire disk before I do upgrades of any kind, but I've never actually needed
that as a fallback, so I'd only recommend it if you're feeling especially
paranoid and it isn't too much effort for you.
