Backing up Geoserver's data-directory, doing a clean install, and putting the 
directory back (or re-creating the symbolic link if that's how you're doing it) 
should be enough. Personally, I typically create an image (snapshot) of the 
entire disk before I do upgrades of any kind, but I've never actually needed 
that as a fallback, so I'd only recommend it if you're feeling especially 
paranoid and it isn't too much effort for you.
