Hum... not familiar with the message per se, checked, it has been
introduced a couple of years ago by Gabriel (cc'ed):

My guess is that some sort of NPE is happening, because there is no error
message being expanded in your log.
To get the full information move the logging level to
GEOSERVER_DEVELOPER_LOGGING and that should give us
the full stack trace
