Hi all,
I am trying with this email to add my thoughts to the discussion, even
though my goal here is to try and do something instead of just waiting
for some actions.
I hope that the members of the project share with me the will to build
a more solid geotools for the future and that none of us is just
trying to make it fail for selfish reasons.

Here is is what I think:

1> I agree with Adrian, simply adding new people does not really look
like a solution to me to tackle the current problems
2> I admit I have not read the Developers Guide in a long time and I
suspect I am not the only one.
3> I agree with Adrian, we have all more or less failed with respect
to our role of leaders
4> Aime got the right point, right now GeoTools is being pulled in
various directions by all involved teams (udig, geoserver,
geosolutions and geomatys) for their own reasons, and none of the
above teams, except for jody probably, is looking at the project as a
whole (whatever reason we might have does not count, at least if you
want to be part of the PMC). Acuster is wrong when he says that the
problems we are having are related to a non functional board, the
problems we have are related to the fact that we are having very
difficult views over geotools and each one of us is minding only its
own business and goals.
5> I agree with Aime, simply dismissing the PMC does not help. To me
it really seems like giving up and wait for someone to do a final fork
and say goodbye to the others.
6> I agree with Aime about the need for a good leader which means good
coder + good communications skils + ( I am adding this) + time and
will to steer the community. So far the only one that has been able to
come closer to this description (at least since when I was involved)
is Jody, but now things have changed for him as well ( happy to be
wrong though).

What I would suggest:

1> We do not step down as a whole, but each one should *really* decide
if he wants to take part of the game. We may also propose new names
for the PMC as part of this.
2> We need to define more clearly the role of PMC members and we also
need to define ways to remove members based on consensus with the
others PMC and/or specific responsibilities
3> We need to cut the dead parts of geotools and stop carrying around
all this weight of old unsupported modules, even if we end up with 4
modules. This would probably motivate people to more participation if
they want their stuff to be part of the project
4> We need to decide what to do with the geotidy effort since all we
have done so far has been sitting and waiting looking at emails saying
" geotidy will do this" or "geotidy will do that". Don't get me wrong
on this, I am not trying to start a new fight (and I won't start it
even if anyone will try real hard) but as I said once:
- This is essentially a unilateral effort started with little or no
communication
- I have not seen a real plan for the work to do
- I have not seen a discussion about ways to collaborate with the effort
therefore it is quite hard to look at this effort and think that it
has been started thinking about the future of geotools as a community
project rather than as a company-owned project.

Hoping to make things move, even just a little bit.
Simone.
