I can't come, but can I comment? :)

I see you want to get rid of JAI. GeoTools is still heavily based on it,
and we
are still managing with good success with it, during my day to day work we
process terabytes of imagery at ease with it.
It has bugs, and sometimes we roll our own pure java version of this or that
operator (recent VM are not so bad when it comes to processing raster
data, performance is often fine), but overall it's still quite a bit better
than most things out there when it comes to processing images that
are larger than the available memory.
GDAL is a very nice image manipulation library, but what do you do when you
exceed its limits and need tile oriented processing and/or scientific data
processing?

Just my 2 cents

Cheers
Andrea
