Yes, imageio-ext wraps GDAL in a JAI structure, creates JAI ImageIO image
readers around it and then builds coverage readers on top of that.

I actually don't use them, I just always wanted to have that bridge but I

no specific need for it.
That said, it should be working, afaik some other GeoTools developer used
it
