Yeah, I've been there also, although with lighter use cases. I've used JAI along with jaitools some time ago with excellent results. I suppose that the interest in GDAL is mainly because of the many formats it supports. But a priori, I think that the imageio-ext approach is the way to go. On the vector side, we talked on the mailing list about integrating OGR also. I supported geotools integration by providing these two links[1][2] but I know nothing about these plugins. Are they stable and active? Are they interesting? Regards.
