I listened to the unedited Berkman interview with Wolfram this weekend (he repeats himself a lot, you could probably wait for the edit) and he explained that part of how they are able to do what they do with semantic processing is that their system is fundamentally bounded by the kinds of data and computations it can do. Therefore, they aren't really trying to "understand" language in the sense of the more vexing problems of natural language processing.
