Danny Dorling used Excel to make his Circle Cartograms.

Use Lat/Long as x/y in a scatter plot. Use symbols for your variable. Viola! A
map!

I'll have to set up a Winders box just to see the new Excel mapping stuff Steve
is talking about.

Related, GeoFlow is interesting in that it makes putting a map in Excel as easy

Hi All,

I'm teaching an elective cartography/geospatial mapping techniques
summer-school class at UC Berkeley this summer. The class is for junior-high
school kids who are at UCB summer school taking advanced courses in other
subjects, and doing the mapping for fun. I'm looking for a easily accessible
open source map app that I could teach the students in an hour or so, and that
they could easily play and create with for a couple hours after that (only one
three hour class will be dedicated to the topic). During other sessions, I'll
be teaching remote sensing, GPS, GIS, and classic cartography.

Any new cool open source map apps out there that I should know about? Your
help is greatly appreciated.

Much thanks,
Catherine
