Catherine,

You'll get a lot of response I think from the list, but my favorite fir this
type of work is GeoMoose (www.geomoose.org<http://www.geomoose.org>). It
allows the data publication and maintenance to be distributed on the back end.
It installs with a working demo and can be run in a server client
configuration, where GeoMoose and it's services are on a single server and/or,
it can be run as a standalone stack on fairly low end equipment. The server
Client configuration allows you to set up the service once, and then
concentrate on the cartography aspects for each student. Then can then mix and
match their datasets at the server point and see the data side by side in the
output. GeoMoose also allows for the importing of external WMS services as
well.

Take a look and see what you think. I'm actually off to give a GeoMoose
workshop in a couple of hours, and I've been trying to find someone interested
in setting up a more involved curriculum as you've described for GeoMoose.

Subject: [Geowanking] Open Source Map App for Teens?

Hi All,

I'm teaching an elective cartography/geospatial mapping techniques
summer-school class at UC Berkeley this summer. The class is for junior-high
school kids who are at UCB summer school taking advanced courses in other
subjects, and doing the mapping for fun. I'm looking for a easily accessible
open source map app that I could teach the students in an hour or so, and that
they could easily play and create with for a couple hours after that (only one
three hour class will be dedicated to the topic). During other sessions, I'll
be teaching remote sensing, GPS, GIS, and classic cartography.

Any new cool open source map apps out there that I should know about? Your
help is greatly appreciated.

Much thanks,
Catherine
