Teenagers in Luxemborg used QGIS and OpenStreetMap to make maps last year. http://www.mapkibera.org/blog/2012/07/01/luxembourg-students-make-maps-for-kibera/.
The instructor was pretty interested to share curriculum and such.

Subject: [Geowanking] Open Source Map App for Teens?
Hi All,I’m teaching an elective cartography/geospatial mapping techniques summer-school class at UC Berkeley this summer. The class is for junior-high school kids who are at UCB summer school taking advanced courses in other subjects, and doing the mapping for fun. I’m looking for a easily accessible open source map app that I could teach the students in an hour or so, and that they could easily play and create with for a couple hours after that (only one three hour class will be dedicated to the topic). During other sessions, I’ll be teaching remote sensing, GPS, GIS, and classic cartography.Any new cool open source map apps out there that I should know about? Your help is greatly appreciated.Much thanks,CatherineCatherine Burton | Managing Partner, Endpoint Environmental LLCSan Francisco, CA. | t/f (415) 379-9296 | m (415) 902-0403GIS and remote sensing image analysis servicesCertified: ORCA SB, SBA SB WO, CA DGS SB, SF HRC LBE, EBMUD WO SBE, LA WBE
