Whether or not it's GPS, it seems like this is worthy of more mention. It certainly looks like someone has finally integrated positioning with an interface that satisfies me in an overall package that is worth while (a bargain, even).

i've been curious about the same - considering got Apple got Cingular to do some custom work to provide the three-way calling UI and visual voicemail, perhaps they've cut some deal with them to make use of previous unreleased / unused positioning tech Cingular has.

So, it seems to be underreported in the coverage of the Apple iPhone, but I've seen a couple of references to it having some kind of positioning technology. Actually, a photo caption in the Chicago Tribune's "Red Eye" tabloid says that it's actually GPS. I had guessed that because of cost it might be some lower precision technology (but I don't claim to know that much about the tech details or costs, hence my interest in getting opinions from members of this list...)

I know all about Apple secrecy, but wondering if people know (or just want to wildly speculate) any more about this...
