So... do I understand that you're saying it's "paranoid" to observe
that Apple's said several times in several ways that the platform is
closed? Don't belittle people! Why is this list going all gushy over
this single product - that's all it is, a product - just because
Steve J whipped one out of his trousers and once you saw it, you
wanted one in your pants too? Apple has never made money with open
hardware and it doesn't appear they're about to upend a profitable
business model.
There are plenty of other wireless commodity devices in the world
that can be programmed. Why not spend some energy on discussing those
instead, and leave the productgasms on fanboy lists?

Hi,
This was taken a bit out of context, I believe. There seems to be
caution being expressed that "just any" phone application won't
initially be installable on the phone without some sort of testing
and approval process, but that doesn't necessarily say anything
about Web or Internet applications. I happily run a ridiculous
number of Internet-enabled apps on my Treo 650 on the Cingular
network. Crashes the Treo all the time, but doesn't seem to bring
down the cellular network. However, it makes the device hard for
anyone else to pick up and use. In addition, Cingular supports
several Pocket PC and Windows Mobile phone PDA's on which you can
run Skype Mobile. They don't seem too adverse to my using - and
paying for GPRS / EDGE bandwidth.
It is entirely possible, of course, that the first release of the
device won't be perfect for everybody ; > \
Paranoia is generally healthy, but I'm detecting a bit of
indulgence along with the significant entertainment value of this
thread.

It seems that 3rd party applications are not wanted on the iPhone:

There has been no mention of implications for app developers to
create apps for
the iPhone. Surely, this is running a stripped down version of
OS X Leopard.
Will the advent of Dashcode for mobile widget development and
Mobile OS X
Leopard, enable Apple to open up for developers. It would be very
unwise to have a closed system.
It is also going to be very interesting on what and how Apple
will open this up (APIs) and I hope
they don't close this like the iPod was (but that was not running
OS X). I hope Apple
addresses developers soon and open up an ecosystem and coherent
plan for developers
soon.
Thoughts? Did anyone go to any of the MacWorld developer talks?
