Steve,

I think I understand your comments a little better now that I have read
your subsequent posts, and I understand your frustrations.

I am amazed at some of the challenges that existing with sharing code
among open source geospatial programs that share the same programming
language. I can imagine it is much harder to get commercial entities to
agree on a standard.

It makes me wonder how we ever got the standards in place that allow the
internet to operate, or even the standards that allow us to plug in so
many appliances to the same wall outlet.

It seems that software vendors could learn a lot from other industries
in this respect.

There are some efforts in this area of collaboration though, are there
not? Look at the OSGeo and the OGC...

Still, I wonder how successful we will be at building a common platform
for a "Digital Earth" if the bog boys don't want to play.

"Many people" also don't contribute to overall progress, so I would
argue that there is a high degree of correlation between the two groups.

Looking at the names that have appeared on my screen via this list...
you're conference organisers and journalists? So don't take my
comments as an attack on you, only as a statement of how I haven't
found the group I'm looking for.
