i think the big boys have scooped up worldwide coverage with aerial
photography, but the last-metre problem is only going to be handled
by some form of collaboration. Fortunately, the last-metre of ground
level views is the most important as this is what people really want
to see.
The sheer amount of data for ground level imagery, coupled with the
sheer amount of intensive labour for comprehensive coverage means
that a method of allowing people to take and position their own
photographs will be the only practical way of handling this issue.
I think that's part of what PhotoSynth is about, but the field is
wide open for innovative people to come up with a collaborative
arrangement. As people contribute their own images to a virtual
reality, they should continue to have copyright and control over that
imagery.
