I think a very different class of users tends to center around forums
(perhaps younger users?) but I much prefer the inbox-like behavior of
a mailing list.
Though I've got enough web stuff to deal with in my life, I probably
should set up a wiki and/or announcement area for gowanking (and
maybe something around jobs or work available.)

Good point -- NNTP exactly.
That said, I haven't run a news reader in years. But I think it's
true that mailing lists are on their way to obsolescence, and I've
started lots of them in my time.
That said, I'm afraid I wouldn't monitor geowanking as much as I do
if it didn't come through my inbox. Traffic is kind of bursty, and
unfortunately a lot of it is relatively over my head or outside my
experience, but there is still a lot of interesting stuff I pick up
through you all (thanks!).
But forums are super easy to set up, and as small as the geowanking
community is, the admin burden for a phpBB kind of thing probably
would be less than email. But not all technologies are right for
all communities.
