In my experience community activity is either mailing list or web forums, but not both. I've yet to see a successful crossover between the two in any community (despite competent examples of gateway software). IMHO, one will always be ignored. I don't know what the the deciding factors are in picking which one, but for my part I find web forums to be much too poor in performance to make it worth the effort, especially when searching or being offline. Given the healthy nature of the community on this list, I'd be cautious about investing too much in forum/web presence.
