 Screw NNTP, it's called RSS.

Not to pick a fight or anything, but NNTP is superior in several ways from a
technical standpoint to RSS. More to the point, it solves a different
problem. One could easily represent NNTP posts using an RSS feed, but NNTP
has lots of intelligent solutions to distributing the load of data storage
and query, and threading and read/unread kinds of things. I am sure there
are smart explanations about why NNTP has drifted out of common use, but
it's not because it was totally without merit.

Re Josh's point about a different class of users, I think that can be true
to a point, but I don't think it's fundamental to the format, and it can be
managed a lot by social example and judicious moderation. Forums also bring
better archiving, and can reduce the need for interminable copying of prior
remarks.

But like I said, I like the inboxiness for geowanking too. I've just been
wondering about the sweet spot lately and took this opportunity to bounce
ideas out there.
