I am sure there are smart explanations about why NNTP has drifted out of common use, but it's not because it was totally without merit.Probably because it requires a special client...
Unfortunately not that simple. Most mail clients have native support for NNTP. Outlook, Outlook Express, OS X's Mail, and Thunderbird all have it. I'm certain there's plenty of others.
