It has saved me a lot of extra "footwork".

I will investigate the sites suggested; though I must say my intuition and
personal experience is in tune with Mike.

However it would be fair, I think, to say that participation in such
enterprises has been, well, slow in coming.  Similar projects have been
around for at least a decade, however I'm not sure that today people are
discovering much more geoinfo using these methods, or if Google and similar
IR techniques are already overtaking these digital library-based techniques.
