I've been able to save some money on vet bills for dogs and cats by
utilizing a clinic that serves as a teaching site for vet students. I feel
comfortable with that arrangement because of my nursing background to
"second opinion" (different species, but the protoplasm is basically the
same) and I'm sure someone who has experience with gerbils and access to a
mailing list of other experts can feel comfortable with the arrangement,
also, if it is available. Another plus for gerbil fanciers would be
providing a model of "respect the rodent" for the vet students to take into
their future practices!
