Colony setting?  That really isn't wise for gerbils.  In the wild the dominant female 
will
frequently drive other females of breeding age away.  In domesticity where is the poor 
female
to go?  This frequently results in injuries and death.  If you want more than a pair, 
your safest
bet is to get 3-4 young males, 5-6 weeks old, and put them in a 20 gallon or larger 
tank.  If
you want to breed you need to stick with pairs or you are risking disaster.
