Pair Separation

My female gerbil is currently pregnant and the male is in the same tank as her. I heard that the male also helps out with the pups and stuff...but I dont want her getting pregnant again after this litter (or at least, not for a while). Would it be okay to remove the male? My plan is to leave the male by himself and then when the male pups are weaned, put them in the tank with him and leave the females in the female's tank.
