You have the right idea. Some folks feel it is unfair to take the mate from the female. However, I have separated my males and found no ill effects for the mom. The females will do just fine on their own. If you leave the male in the cage you are guarantied a new litter in a month! My plan is to leave the male by himself and then when the male pups are weaned, put them in the tank with him and leave the females in the female's tank.
