Hi Jason,
On my first litter I did remove the father a couple of days before
the birth (day 23) and it worked out okay. The father is very good
about keeping the pups warm and a comfort to the mother too, I think. I
was lucky because my litter was small (2) and sometimes it's hard for
them to stay warm.
If you can handle a second litter, an easier way (on the gerbils) to
split your pair is to let the first litter be raised by mom and dad, and
before the second litter comes put dad and the boys in one tank and
leave a daughter with mom to help her out.
But if you can't have too many pups and need to separate them, they
should do okay.
