Hi Mary,

One thing that has helped with my gerbils is to have the bedding several
inches deep.  My pair want to have the pups at the bottom of a nice deep
hole.  (they do live in burrows in the wild)  I also give them lots of
tissue paper that I rip into strips.  They use this on top mixed with
bedding that they have softened.

I think that they feel the pups are safer the deeper they are.
