I'm not sure this is a good idea. It is common for gerbil nests to get
disrupted and the pups to be scattered everywhere, to a certain
extent. Eventually a parent will put them back (although I never could
resist helping anyway!) Typically the male helps take care of them so your
mother may actually have a harder time with him gone. I'm not sure, not
having actually seen his behavior. I am curious to know what the rest of
the list thinks.
