>I recall seeing one of these wheels in use at a local PetSmart. They had
one in a gerbil cage and one in a hamster cage (I believe). Anyway, I don't
remember exactly how far the gerbils had managed to run, but it was quite a
bit. It's a neat little wheel... I've been trying to talk Kevin into
getting one for one of our gerbil groups (since it's the only group with
anyone that likes to run), but he hasn't given in yet...

>As for how to rig a normal wheel, I haven't a clue...

I am going to ask my hubby. He needs something to do.
I will even let him into my box of sacred hoarded optical
sensor parts...

This sounds like something he'd even like to do.

The criteria: must be inexpensive, parts must be available
(aka, get them from Radio Shack or the like) and it must
be battery operated...and GNAW RESISTANT! And if
some-bod puts a tooth in it, it won't fry them.

Will let you know.
