This is the Mongolian Gerbil section of "ECOLOGY OF DESERT RODENTS OF
THE USSR (JERBOAS AND GERBILS): N P Naumov, V S Lobachev. There are
similar sections on other gerbil species such as Persian Jirds and
Midday Gerbils, including a huge section on Great Gerbils. Basically the
article is a summary in English of Soviet research into the ecology
Gerbils and Jerboas. The article is over 130 pages long and is mainly
about gerbils.

This was published as part of:

RODENTS IN DESERT ENVIRONMENTS, Prakash, L and Gosh, P.K. (volume
editors)., Dr W. Junk b.v. Publishers, The Hague., 1975, 90 6193 080 4

And a lot of the info on my pages comes from it and similar sources.

Getting back to wheels, there is a mention in this article about a
gerbil that had travelled a long way. but this was alone gerbil. In
ECOLOGY AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF MONGOLIAN GERBILS, MERIONES UNGUICULATUS,
AT XILINHOT, INNER MONGOLIA, CHINA.: Agren G, Zhou Q, Zhong W, 1989,
Animal Behaviour, 37, 11-27, the most detailed observational account of
how gerbils live in the wild, the gerbils rarely left their territory
which only extended 10 to 30 (35 to 100 feet) metres from their burrow.
