This is normal. Studies show they are more active at night. Certainly
their eyes are better adapted for night vision.

Whatever you do, do not feed your gerbils just before going to bed (as I
see Jackie is just about to do!) This is guaranteed to make them very
active for the first two hours after you go to bed.
