I thought Deb Adams' list was great except for this one.
You really WANT to teach a gerbil to jump? This is just
a Houdini in training and will be much harder to keep
in their cage...
I would subsititute perhaps using some toilet tissue rolls
or paper towel tubes, and see if you can get your gerbil
to run through a particular one for a treat. Use some
way of marking which of say, three tubes, and if the
gerbil goes down the one indicated, it gets a treat....
When it's trained, you move the marker to the tube
that it's supposed to go down, treat the gerbil at the
other end, then reset the marker and repeat until the
gerbil is full of treats <G>
