Loo roll chewing contests are a regular feature at NGS shows. Usually each
gerbil or pair of gerbils is given a loo roll and a timer set. After say 5
minutes, the gerbil/s that have chewed the most win. It's great fun and
draws in the crowds.
Another idea is gerbil art. If you fold a piece of paper and give it to the
gerbils to chew, you get very interesting patterns. You can experiment
folding in different ways and with different paper shapes e.g. rectangle,
circle, square. When you open the paper you also get very good
illustrations of symmetry. All good ideas for a science project. As an
added bonus, the gerbils love doing this too. The gerbils I keep in school
are very accomplished paper sculptors as the kids give them lots of
practice.
Good luck
