Hi Charlie,
Although I haven't tried this personally, I have heard
that it you want to prevent the post-birth mating, you
can just remove the male for up to 24 hours. I've
heard that this is about long enough for their urge to
mate to pass, but not so long that they will forget
about each other and fight when you put them back
together.
As for litter size, I have heard anywhere from 1 to 10
pups per litter.
