I agree.  I once had problems after a gerbil went to the vets for a scent
gland tumour removal.  24 hours later, the pair would not go back together.
  Since then I have always taken the pair to the vets together and insist
they be put back together immediately after treatment.  The same applies to
gerbil shows, if I am going to be away overnight.  The pair travel together
and they are separated only for the duration of the show.  I'm afraid
gerbils do not have long memories and you have to respect that.
