I had to have a gerbil euthanised once, the vet was extremely kind and
sympathetic.
This is off the record, but as I had been a regular there with my many other
pets, he didn't me charge for the service.

Most vets will charge a nominal fee for euthanasia of a small
critter. I had a guinea pig in college who was very ill - no hope for
recovery and the vet charged me $15. The least you could do is that.
They use sodium pentobarbital which will kill the animal more
humanely than you can. Any vet can calculate a proper dosage based on
the animals weight - and all vets have it...at least do that if you
do not feel that you are able or want to spend the money for
treatment.
