Our experience is that it varies a lot.
Some airlines will allow gerbils in the cabin, but most won't. Even
those who do will often say it is at the Captain's discretion. Even if
it is allowed you can be caught out by code sharing. This is very common
in Europe where two airlines will share a route, so you do not know
which airline you will fly with until maybe a day or two before, maybe
only when you get to the airport.
For example, Finnair and BA code share. Jackie was once flying to
Sweden. She booked with Finnair because she knows they always allow
animals. BA never does. She got a phone call the day before the flight
to say that the aircraft for her flight was being supplied by BA and no
animals were allowed!
It is the best way to ship animals long distances, but it is easy to get
caught out and you need to specify that you will have animals when you
book the flight.
