Hi, I would agree about the sock and the collar. The gerbil will probably be
able to chew/wiggle his way out of it anyways, only getting himself stressed
in the proccess.

I am looking at the Panalog cream more closely now and although the vet said
(and I observed in my gerbil) that it does have a numbing effect on the area
that is making the gerbil chew itself (and stopping them from wanting to
chew there), this cream does seem to be more for the antibiotic effect than
that.. so it's probably not exactly what you need.... but maybe your vet
will know of a something else that would have this same temporary numbing
effect (some kind of steroids?)... For my gerbil, after the first few
treatments, she was chewing 'down there' much less, and as a result it was
already less sore and less damaged... the cream just prevents the wound from
bothering them long enough for them to stop biting and irritating it so it
can heal...

Good luck, I know it is difficult & stressful to nurse a sick pet...
