Hi everyone,
Today I purchased a new brand of food for my gerbils. It is by hartz if
anyone knows of it. As I was reading the ingredient list I noticed it
contained pumpkin seeds. My question is should I pick these out along with
the peanuts and sunflower seeds. Any other feeding tips would be greatly
appreciated since I am quite new to gerbiling and only 16 years old.
Thanks everyone
Erica
I have found a rather good reference site at
http://netxp.com/rick/gerbils/genetics.html
Click on his link for nutrition. This has helped me a LOT in choosing
the gerbil's next food source (still working on the original bag I
bought!)
Of course, there's been the discussion on this list of mixing your
own from scratch, but honestly my life is too busy and mind consuming
right now that I just don't have the extra brain power to go and
decide what to put in the mix and how much, and hunt all the
ingredients down. But one day... !
It also gives you ideas of what the general nutrition needs are,
whether you are breeding, or you have older gerbils in the family. I
plan on switching to Nutriphase Mouse & Rat Formula, as I use their
Gerbil & Hamster formula right now, but the Mouse and Rat is more
suited to breeding gerbils.
Only I haven't yet to actually find out WHAT exactly is in the
Mouse/Rat stuff, and I find it ridiculous that they put millet (? I
think it is called that, used to give it to my zebra finches as a
treat, but on the stick, not off. Then I found out the reason I was
so miserable was that I was allergic to birds. :( ) and other things
in it that my gerbils don't even touch, and I feel rather silly
having to throw a portion of it away. And of course, I have to make
sure the mix has no nuts in it, for I'm terribly allergic to them. :(
Poor gerbies!
