Speaking as someone who can't afford a copy of Rational Rose for personal use, 
I'd prefer a more free (as in beer, for practical reasons, and as in speech, 
for ideological ones) solution anyway. ArgoUML springs to mind as the obvious 
suggestion, but I'd love to hear about any others. :)

For simple display rather than editable files, PS or PDF sounds sensible enough.

Is there a convention by the ASF using a certain file format for uml diagrams? 
I 
think it's not useful if one uses the format of Rational Rose and an other uses 
an 
incompatible format...
