I traced the problem. I have a popup menu and bevel button that change some 
things on a the window. There is also a popup menu to select different things 
to display on the canvas. when I do bevNext.visible = false or whatever, it 
fires the CHANGE event for the button and that re-paints the canvas. And 
somehow 
this makes an infinite loop. if comment out those visibility lines then it 
works normally again.
