You can organize MDI windows like separate desktops. It comes in handy when you are dealing with multiple windows within an application. Less cluttered. I like SDI windows for utilities and other applications that either do not open other windows.
The only thing that makes SDI windows preferable, to me, is that you can easily click through to the desktop or other applications behind the current window....though sometimes this is actually confusing when a lot of other windows are open. I guess it's all a matter of opinion.
