Exactly, you might want your mouse for some other purpose perhaps in
another vc (or on another head), there still needs to be a way to tell the
thing to let go of the mouse now..

No, it just happens that a lot of QuakeForge coders happen to be Debian

Mercury wants to put it into the -3dfx target which currently uses svgalib
for input and can't grab the mouse from gpm...
