Hmm - XF4 isn't stable for me on any system I tried it on. I switched all
systems back to XF3. Doesn't seem to depend on the graphics chipset - I
tried with Matrox G200,G400 some ATI controller and a few noname boards I
can't remember right now. Symptom is irregular crashes or instantaneous
reboots. Strangest symptom I had was the WM stopping to take input while at
the same time hosing something in the kernel preventing a clean shutdown
even when loggin in via network.

Hmm - Could it be, that the palette gets exhausted ? Try the following:
1) run xsetroot afterwards. Do the apps work again, then ?
2) Try to start netscape. If it comes up black&white, that's a sure sign of
   palette exhaustion.
Have no idea how to fix it, though.

I have checked that with a HW-diagnostics tool. It seems to be a keyboard
issue. Depending on the keybord, you can have more or less keys down, before
it starts to forget others. Well memory in a keyboard is limited :-).
