I don't know, which way is the right one, due to lack of experience
with X. I would go this way: Provide patches for each way you propose
above on the list and hope to get feedback. The patch, which takes
less issues open is likely the right way... :)

Before we are going to do that, shouldn't we check the old docs, if
there is something, which is still (partly) valid??

This is currently true for libgii. For all other libs/extensions the
build-system is prepared to fix that.
