OK I agree with your philosophical points, mostly. Though it is a novel take to be anti-idempotence :-). I am probably not understanding the technical aspects. What I mean is that the process is: 0. Assuming master is on version 2.X.0-SNAPSHOT 1. Select a commit Z from which to branch 2. Create the branch `release-2.X.0` at commit Z 3. Push a commit to move master to 2.(X+1).0-SNAPSHOT Each of 1, 2, and 3 are logically independent. There is no reason for a failure in 3 to even cause us to consider rerunning 2. It isn't that we are allowing silent success with no change. It is that we have a conceptual checkpoint after 2 that we never have to revisit.
