Normally you would click the "fork" button near the top of http://github.com/edgecase/ruby_koans. Github will fork the project to your own repo, and you can use that URL to check the project out. On your harddrive it will have no direct connection to the original. It will, however, so your repo as a fork of repo A on the Github page for your repo.
As far as being "read only", only you will have write access to your fork, unless you specifically assign collaborators. Others can still fork your copy. That's the gist of it.
